Wow the museum for the Duomo is an absolute treasure and I think it is just an afterthought for the majority of visitors to Florence. It really is a beautiful museum, well planned and the architecture and organization is wonderful. Here are some of our photos…
The entrance. We had a soggy walk to the museum, but this little fluff ball had his raincoat on and was good to go 😆We walked around trying to find the ticket office which is not in the museum, at least not in the off season monthsThe entry hall.Wow who knew the real doors are all in here, and amazing to be so close to them, plus they have a few replicas of things that you can touch which is exciting for those of us who are more tactile, yes the 5 year old in all of us!Etruscan relief.Look at this door of lions 🦁 so gorgeous, in every pose from ferocious to precious! Here is one of the statues that you could touch. And the original Pieta by Michelangelo is beautifully on show here, the one in the Accademia is a copy, and guess what Michelangelo actually tried to destroy the statue when he realized there were flaws in the marble, but one of the Medicis thankfully had it put back together again. They had a long room with all these sculpted medallions that were originally in the church showing the beginning of all the arts, sciences and of course drunkenness – here is Noah the first time he got drunk on wine 😂Beginning of debate, which was the closest I could find to the beginning of lawyering, it was appropriately right next to grammar!Another lovely lion!Second floor view of the main hall.I fell in love with these gorgeous tile sculptures – not sure the official name – but they were all organized and giving tribute to music. All silver altar featuring John the Baptist, the detail was incredible.Room with the wooden models that Brunelleschi used to plan and build the DomeWell positioned leather couches for a rest on the third floor with a view of the dome model room. And then wow this little taste of the dome through a skylight. Another floor up with a view of the main hall showing the statues from the original facade of the church. And then we turn a corner go up a few more stairs to we weren’t sure where, and bam a wonderful reward for diligently making sure we saw everything there was to see in the museum. There was a beautiful patio with this view of the Duomo. We were the only ones up there and the sun had come out and sent the rain away!
