Yorkshire visits – Wold Newton, Filey and Grindale

on

The villages and friends I visited are less than a mile away from Wold Newton, the village that my grandparents had a holiday home in that they then retired to. I was lucky enough to spend many holidays there with them and also a year living with them and going to school in Scarborough, which is how I met all these amazing Yorkshire women from the local farming families.

Pictures from around Wold Newton and the neighboring villages…roads traveled many a time. This crossroads at the top of Wold Newton is where our grandfather’s ashes were scattered, at his wish, he loved the wolds so much.

Filey, a nearby seaside town which we visited many times with our grandmother to go to the beach and walk along the cliffs down to Filey Brig to play in its rock pools at low tide. The neighboring village to Boynton is Grindale, where my friend Jane Atkinson grew up and still spends a lot of time visiting her family and boyfriend. Jane, who is now a psychiatrist, was working in Scarborough the week I was there and I was able to visit with her at her parent’s farm. Unfortunately I managed to arrive right when her lovely parents were away for a little holiday. But they readied a guest room for me and even wine in preparation for my visit. Jane’s cousin Stephen and his family (who now run the family farm) organized a barbecue for the evening which we enjoyed very much, reminiscing about our teenage years in the Yorkshire countryside. This is true Yorkshire hospitality, the most kind hearted and down to earth people you’ll ever meet.

Raising our glasses to Jane’s mum and dad, who supplied some lovely wine for the evening…Jane’s boyfriend Jan took the picture and is the missing person from the table. Pictured here are Stephen, his wife, me, Jane, Stephen’s son, son in law and daughter.

My room with a view.

Jane’s’ s parents have a gorgeous seating area adjacent to their kitchen with lovely views, we had our breakfast here the next morning.

I was sad to be leaving Yorkshire that morning but looking forward to visits in the south with my Grandmother, Aunt and Uncle, Sister and a weekend with my friend Mandy from Jamaica who now lives in London.
